Ram Shabri Samwad: Every episode of Ramayana is special. Every context serves a different purpose. This incident of Lord Shri Ram and Shabari will tell you about a different purpose. Shabari was a great devotee of Lord Shri Ram. Shabari’s real name was Shramana. Shabari is always remembered for this because she fed her false plums to Lord Shri Ram.
During the exile, when Ravana abducts Sita Mata and takes her to Lanka, Lord Ram and Lakshman ji reach Dandakaranya forest in search of Sita Mata and from there they reach Shabari Mata’s ashram.
Meaning- Shabriji, who was beautiful, having lotus like eyes and huge arms, a crown of matted hair on his head and a forest garland on his heart, fell at the feet of both the dark skinned and fair brothers.
Who was Shabari?
According to the legend, the real name of Mata Shabari Mata was Shramana. She belonged to Shabar caste of Bhil community. For this reason, later her name became Shabari. Shabari’s father was the chief of the Bhils. He fixed Shabari’s marriage with Bheel Kumar. Before the marriage, many sheep and goats were brought for sacrifice, seeing which Shabari was disturbed, because she was very fond of dumb animals. To stop the killing of innocent animals, Shabari ran away from home to the forest a day before the marriage and saved all the animals.
Shabari ran away from home and reached Dandakaranya forest and started serving Matang Rishi there. Being from the Bhil caste, Shabari used to serve secretly in the ashram. One day, seeing Shabari’s spirit of service, Munivar was very happy and he gave shelter to Shabari in his ashram. He acquired the knowledge of religion and scriptures from Rishi Matang. Matang Rishi himself asked Shabari to worship Shri Ram. That is why one day when Rishi Matang felt that his end time was near, he asked Shabari to wait for Lord Shri Ram in his ashram. One day he will definitely come to meet them and only then you will attain salvation. Shabari started removing the stones and thorns coming in the way of her hut every day, so that the path becomes accessible for the arrival of Shri Ram. Every day she plucked fresh fruits and berries and kept them for Shri Ram.
When Shri Ram and Lakshman ji reached Shabari’s hut in search of Mother Sita, she became emotional and tears started flowing from her eyes.
Meaning- Generous Shri Ramji gave him speed and reached Shabriji’s ashram. When Shabriji saw Shri Ramchandraji coming into the house, his heart became happy remembering the words of Muni Matangji.
It is believed that Shabari fed only sweet berries to Shri Ram after tasting them himself, which Lord Ram ate with love after seeing Shabari’s devotion. Seeing Shabari’s devotion, Shri Ram granted her salvation.
Meaning- He brought very juicy and tasty tubers, roots and fruits and gave them to Shri Ramji. The Lord praised them again and again and ate them with love.
Even today, Shabari Jayanti is celebrated on the seventh day of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. In the year 2024, the Saptami Tithi of Shabari Jayanti will start from 7:53 am on March 2, 2024 and end on March 3, 2024 at 8:44 am. Shabari ji’s ashram is in Shivrinarayan, Chhattisgarh.
